We asked Los Angeles-based artist Liz Walworth for a little Expert Advice:
What advice would you give to someone who feels overwhelmed by the competition? Learn to love it. You have to get in the game to see where you stand, and to figure out how far you need to go. Ultimately, your competition will make you better.
What top three tips would you like to pass along for those who have just started to use social media? Compile a good amount of professional-quality photos in advance, keep the content consistent, and be ready to adapt. Social media is always evolving.
When you think of the best people to work with, what traits do they share? Ambitious, innovative, optimistic, efficient, and funny.
Give a budding entrepreneur your best hiring and firing business practices. For me, finding people to work with is kind of like dating; it’s either awesome or it’s not going to work. Go with your gut, be honest with yourself, and make changes when necessary.
Entrepreneurs often say that “you can’t do it all.” What three things do you always outsource? Graphic design, public relations, and canvas constructing. Although, as an artist, you have to be able to do it all initially.
What business book would you recommend to someone who is either about to launch or in the early growth stage? For artists: I’d Rather Be in The Studio by Alyson B. Stanfield.
What piece of invaluable advice did you receive that you would like to pass on to women pursuing their dream? From a family friend: “You need to paint 100 paintings before you paint a good one.” In other words, there’s a lot of work you need to put in before you start seeing results. But all that work is required. Even your bad paintings serve a purpose.
My best advice to a woman launching a venture is… One step at a time. You don’t need to know what or where all the steps are before you begin. They’ll appear as you go.
What would your advice to your younger self be? Paint more, worry less.

- Whatever kind of artist you are: make, create, repeat.
- Trust your instincts.
- Formulate a digital strategy.
- Find opportunities to collaborate with different creative types. It can expand your circle, your exposure, and your art.
- Don’t undervalue your time or your work.
