Entrepreneur and media personality Jen Boulden is a true pioneer in the green business world. She co-founded Ideal Bite in 2005 to cater to the untapped “light green” consumer market (targeting those of us who want to make better choices for our health and for the planet, but within reason) and became a media darling thanks to her down-to-earth approach to all things green. She and her partner, Heather Stephenson, grew the company and its daily eco-email list to over a half million subscribers before selling the venture to The Walt Disney Company in 2008. Jen has appeared on shows such as Good Morning America, The Today Show, Martha Stewart and The View, and has authored articles for publications ranging from Fast Company to The Huffington Post. A graduate of William & Mary, Jen received a “Green MBA” from George Washington University, where she was recently honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award. She is pro-animal, a country girl at heart, and has been known to say “y’all” after a few beers. Next up for Jen is the launch of JenBTV.com, offering you one go-to site for all of the best-of-the-best ideas, resources and tips for living your life light green. “Y’all” be sure to check it out!

What makes you different from your competition?  Currently there is no leader in smart, sustainable living. Yes, there are a bunch of people who can offer green tips. But who are the “Jamie Olivers” of sustainable living? Who can teach us while being entertaining? Who will make this lifestyle attractive?

Best piece of hiring advice… Hire slow – and make sure to hire for the PERSON, not the position.

Best piece of firing advice… Fire Fast!

What three words best describe your company?  Smart. Uplifting. Galvanizing. And Quirky (ie: Personality-Packed)!

My favorite nail polish and or lipstick is…“Peppermint Lip Whip” by Kari Gran. We taped a segment (with Kari Gran herself!) that highlights exactly why. The episode isn’t being released yet to our audience, but you can see a sneak peak here.

My favorite singer/album is… Alison Krauss. I can never get enough of her voice or her alt-bluegrassy works of art.

My favorite movie is… My favorite movie of 2013 was The Butler. I was spellbound watching history unfold, getting swept up into the story, and being mesmerized by some of the greatest actors (including Oprah!) that we have today.

My favorite TV show is… The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He’s so wicked-brilliant, and his show is a way for me to stay up on news and current events, but with the added plus of hilarious commentary.

My favorite food is… Italian vegetarian sausages by Trader Joe’s. My husband puts them on the grill when we are having a BBQ, and even the meat eaters covet them!

I wish someone would have told me… How to not sweat the small stuff.

I funded my dream by… Saving ever since my first job at 14, which I then parlayed into an apartment in NYC at 27, which I then sold and almost doubled my money. The rest is history.

If I weren’t doing what I do, I would be… Starting a global coalition to bring awareness to the atrocities (for both humans and animals) of Factory Farming.

The key to balancing it all is… Not taking on too much to begin with. But I am 40, and I am just BARELY scratching the surface on that one!
