Prior to launching Beautycounter in 2013, Founder and CEO Gregg Renfrew had already established herself as a forward-thinking entrepreneur who can turn concepts into thriving businesses. She created a successful bridal registry company called The Wedding List and sold it to Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, where she then served the company in executive management. She reinvigorated legendary children’s retail group Best & Co. in her time there as CEO, and she has consulted on concept, branding, marketing and merchandising for Bergdorf Goodman, Intermix, and Lela Rose, among others. She was inspired to start Beautycounter as a mom who learned that the skincare and beauty products she was using on herself and her children often contained known toxins, ingredients that have been linked to cancer, reproductive issues and hormone disruption. Called to action by the statistic that our children’s generation is the first that is sicker and may die younger than their parents, Gregg’s mission is to get safe products and empowering information into the hands of everyone.

The key to balancing it all is… A good partner (my husband Mark, in my case) and accepting that sleep is overrated.
What makes you different from your competition? We run counter to our competition in many ways, because we tell you the truth and we tell you everything. We create high-performing products that are SAFE for your health.
What piece of invaluable advice did you receive that you would like to pass along to women pursuing their dream? You can have an amazing career and a great family, too. You can be a terrific mother even if you are not there 100% of the time.
My biggest challenge is… Managing a team. People are everything to a business and they all have different wants and needs.
My best piece of hiring and/or firing advice is… Be thorough, be decisive, be direct.
The most important thing I have learned to far is… It always takes more money and time than you expect.
The best people to work with are always… Team players with purpose and passion.
My best advice, in one sentence, for launching a venture is… Follow your dream, stick with your gut and realize that you cannot depend on anyone as much as you depend on yourself.
