DREAM CATCHER: AMY GORDINIER-REGAN AND FRANCINE KRENICKI
A centuries-old formula from Victorian England may not seem the likeliest source for a hot new skincare line, but Skinfix has its roots in a healing ointment created in 1850 with ingredients straight from Britain’s pharmacopeia. This “magical formula” was passed down through generations, sought after by customers seeking (and finding) relief from skin conditions from eczema to diaper rash. Brought to life as a skincare brand in 2007 by the creator’s great, great, great-granddaughter, Skinfix earned quick buzz for its healing balms made from vitamins, minerals and botanical oils. Cosmetics executive Amy Gordinier-Regan took over the business in 2012, bringing expertise gained at L’Oréal and Estée Lauder and in her years as an independent beauty and retail consultant. Amy then brought on VP of Product Development Francine Krenicki, who had herself worked for Estée Lauder and then Frederic Fekkai before overseeing Global Product Development for Avon Cosmetics. Together they are building a skincare powerhouse whose focus is less on beauty and anti-aging (though those are certainly perks of the line!) and more on healing troubled skin and maintaining healthy skin at any age.
What piece of invaluable advice did you receive that you would like to pass on to women pursuing their dream?
AMY: Fran sent me a great video of an interview that Tory Burch gave in which she talks about not being afraid of ambition. She grew up with brothers (as did I), and was raised to believe that women and men are equal and can do exactly the same things. There was never a distinction between “I am a girl and they are boys, so therefore…”, and I think this is really important. Women should not be afraid or ashamed of being ambitious. Entrepreneurship requires ambition, courage and relentlessness. Women can embrace that.
FRANCINE: Do what you love. Your career should revolve around your own personal interests. Then even challenging work doesn’t seem so taxing and can actually be quite fun.
AMY: “If you stand for nothing, you will fall for everything.”
FRANCINE: “Be who you are and say what you mean. Those that mind don’t matter and those that matter don’t mind.” - Dr. Seuss
My best advice, in one sentence, for launching a venture is… AMY: Have no fear.
The best people to work with always… FRANCINE: Have a sense of humor and can laugh at themselves.
LET’S GET PERSONAL:
AMY: What three words best describe your company? Heritage. Efficacy. Canadian.
Best thing about motherhood… Absolutely everything. Being a mom is profoundly rewarding. We moms are exceptionally blessed.
One thing I hope to pass along to my children… Ambition – no matter what they do, I want them to feel a sense of purpose and ambition.
FRANCINE: When you go on vacation you always… Schedule a day or two after my return to get organized and transition back into the work week.
Being a mom and an entrepreneur means…Being able to juggle many balls in the air at the same time.
