We asked Nicole Delahooke, the Designer and Founder of Delahooke, for a little Expert Advice:

What advice would you give to someone who feels overwhelmed by the competition? Focus on the caliber and quality of your product. No one should define what you’re doing or where your energy is going more than you.

What would you like to pass along for those who have just started to use social media? Study what does and doesn’t work for your competition, make sure you have high quality photos, and keep the content consistent.

When you think of the best people to work with, what traits do they share? A constant desire to learn, high energy, and adaptive to change.

Give a budding entrepreneur your best hiring and firing business practices. Trust your instincts, learn from your mistakes, know what you’re looking for.

Entrepreneurs often say that “you can’t do it all.” What three things do you always outsource? Website design, photo editing, and digital strategy. (I swear by The Acme Agency as a one-stop shop for all of these things).

What business book would you recommend to someone who is about to launch or is in the early growth stage? How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie and Losing My Virginityby Richard Branson.

What are your thoughts on raising capital? Every start-up is different. Evaluate your business needs, how important full ownership is to you, and what your best long-term growth strategy is.

What piece of invaluable advice did you receive that you would like to pass on to women pursuing their dream? From a highly respected family friend, “When you make a mistake, fix it.”

My best advice to a woman launching a venture is… Believe in yourself, learn to adapt, and stay focused.

What would your advice to your younger self be? Don’t let fear of failure manipulate how much risk you’re capable of taking.

Finally, give us five tips that would benefit a woman who is launching or growing her business:

  1. Know your product inside and out, start to finish. It’s the surest way to maintain a high standard of quality control.
  2. No risk, no reward. Be strategic with where you decide to take your risks and know what you are risking for.
  3. Working hard is a start, but not enough. Work smart.
  4. Think outside the box and be adaptive to change!
  5. Surround yourself with a fantastic team. Take the time to build it and take care of it as you grow!
